Spaces Built for Connection and Community

The Proud Place

Located on Sidney Street, The Proud Place is a welcoming LGBTQ+ community hub in the heart of Manchester. Home to The Proud Trust, the space hosts a range of queer youth groups, adult community sessions and relaxed queer co-working days every other Tuesday from 10am-4pm. Whether you’re looking to meet new people, find support or simply spend time in an inclusive environment, The Proud Place offers a safe and community focused environment.

Rainbow Mind

Rainbow Mind is a Manchester-based organisation providing mental health support, wellbeing services and community events created by and for LGBTQIA+ people. Their work focuses on creating safe, inclusive spaces through guided walks, workshops, young peoples support groups and dedicated connect groups for Black, Asian and Minoritised Ethnicity LGBTQ+ communities. Rainbow Noir

Rainbow Noir is a volunteer-led community group dedicated to celebrating, uplifting and advocating for LGBTQ+ People of Colour across Manchester. Through regular social events and community meetups, including Thursday gatherings at The Proud Place, the organisation creates welcoming spaces centred around connection, visibility and support for queer people of colour in the city.

Queer Creative Spaces

Social Refuge

Part queer bookshop, part coffee spot and part community space, Social Refuge has become the go-to hangout in Ancoats for Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community. Alongside coffee and a carefully curated selection of books, the space regularly hosts quiz nights, book launches, open mic events and co-working sessions, creating a relaxed and welcoming environment to socialise, work or discover something new.

Manchester Queer Art Market

Founded in 2022 by queer artists Ben Saunders and Ben Hodges, Manchester Queer Art Market is a not-for-profit event celebrating Northern queer creatives. Hosted regularly at venues across the city, the market brings together over 20 independent stallholders selling everything from artwork and handmade crafts to zines, prints and hand-poke tattoos. With workshops, interactive experiences and a strong focus on inclusivity, it’s become a vibrant space for discovering local queer talent and supporting Manchester’s creative community.

HOME is Manchester’s hub for contemporary film, theatre, art and performance, with a strong reputation for championing diverse and underrepresented voices. People’s History Museum

The People’s History Museum is a national museum dedicated to the story of working people in the UK, exploring themes of democracy, activism and social change. Manchester Icons

Canal Street

At the heart of Manchester’s Gay Village, Canal Street is one of the city’s most iconic LGBTQ+ destinations. Stretching along the Rochdale Canal, it’s home to a vibrant mix of bars, clubs and cafes that have helped shape Manchester’s queer nightlife and culture for decades.

Popular venues along the street include Via, The Molly House, Richmond Tea Rooms, Rembrandt and New Union. It’s also the central home of Manchester Pride each August bank holiday, when the area becomes the focal point of the city’s pride celebrations.

Sackville Gardens

Just a few steps away from Canal Street, Sackville Gardens offers a quieter, reflective green space in the middle of the city. Overlooking the canal, it is home to the statue of computer science pioneer and LGBTQ+ icon Alan Turing, as well as the Beacon of Hope memorial dedicated to those lost to HIV/AIDS.

The gardens also hold deep significance in Manchester’s Pride calendar, hosting candle-lit vigils each year on World AIDS Day and at the end of Manchester Pride, offering a moment of reflection and remembrance within the city’s celebrations.

Red Light

Tucked away in Kampus on the other side of the canal, Red Light is a standout cocktail bar ranked among the UK’s top 50. Known for its stylish interiors and expertly crafted drinks, it’s a space that proudly serves Manchester’s LGBTQ+ community while remaining open and welcoming to everyone. Pride Events to Add to Your Calendar

Sparkle Weekend

Sparkle Weekend is the UK’s longest-running celebration of trans lives, taking place from Friday 26 to Sunday 28 June in Sackville Gardens, Manchester. Centred on visibility, joy and community, the festival welcomes people who identify as trans, non-binary and gender variant, alongside their friends, families and allies. Across the weekend, the gardens become a vibrant space for celebration, connection and collective pride.

Dykes Who Hike

Dykes Who Hike is a Manchester-based walking group for LGBTQ+ women, trans and non-binary people, offering a more outdoors-focused way to connect with community. The group organises monthly, train-accessible walks across Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire and the Peak District, making it easy to join in without cost or pressure. It’s a relaxed, social space built around getting outside, meeting new people and exploring local landscapes together.
