This session will explore the concept of "safe spaces" within SUs, focusing on the nuanced question of who these spaces are truly safe for. Using the 2024 incident at Sheffield SU, where we accidentally banned being gay as a case study, this session will delve into the perception gaps around safety in SU settings.
It will address how "radical hospitality" can both challenge and define safety, the dangers of weaponising safety, and the broader implications for inclusivity. Participants will also gain practical insights and actionable solutions for navigating these complex dynamics in their own SUs.
Staff working in clubs and societies, advice, student reps, democracy, governance, campaigning – anything within membership services across the UK.
