Thinking of visiting us over the next few weeks? Check out our latest opening times, first.
Starting university is super exciting, it can be kinda scary too. When I left my hometown for the first time, I was pretty nervous about starting totally fresh. But no need to stress – take it from a seasoned student that’s done it all, follow these do’s and don’ts to ensure a smooth transition into your uni journey.
Seeing a friendly face when you arrive somewhere new is always nice. There are lots of freshers’ group chats to get to know people before you even arrive. I got to know 3 of my flatmates before moving, so it was exciting to finally meet them!
It’s important to have time by yourself, but in the first few weeks, try spending time in the communal areas mingling with your flatmates. This gives you the opportunity to start a convo, plan activities and create friendships.
Slippers = new BFF. I had no idea how much I would need them. The floor of a shared uni kitchen isn’t for the faint-hearted, avoid stepping on gross food and bring those trusty slippers.
It's a common misconception that the bins will magically take themselves out. When there’s a lot of people living together, it’s no surprise they will fill up quickly. As someone that’s been burdened with the task of removing a week’s worth of 12 people’s rubbish, I recommend emptying them before they’re full.
For me, making my hall feel like home was key to settling in. Bring decorations that make you feel at home, The Union hosts plant and poster sales at the beginning of the year which are perfect for decorating your room AND a great opportunity to socialise with your new friends!
For kitchenware, bring cutlery, plates and glasses. For pots and pans, however, you’ll likely end up with 9 of everything leaving no room for the essentials (pasta, rice, pesto etc.) So, if you manage to make a group chat pre-move-in, discuss who’s bringing what.
Good luck and enjoy every moment!
