Moving to a new city can be a bit nerve-wracking, but don't worry—The Union’s got you.

Whatever you’re looking for Manchester has got you covered. Here’s your go to guide to get to know your new home.

Exploring Manchester's Quarters

Manchester is made up of several unique quarters, each with its own vibe. Here’s a little tour of the must-visit areas:

  • Northern Quarter: If you love all things indie and artsy, the Northern Quarter is your spot. Think quirky cafes, vintage shops, and street art around every corner. Don’t miss the Makers Market on the second Sunday of every month—perfect for picking up handmade goodies and tasty treats!

Here is also where you can find the legendry Afflecks. This independent shopping emporium has over 60 small shops in one place, ranging from tattoo artists to fashion boutiques.

Whilst a night out here is a bit pricier, the unique bars and electric atmosphere make it totally worth it.

  • Spinningfields: For a fancier night out Spinningfields is the place to be.  Here you’ll find stylish bars and restaurants, ideal for sipping cocktails in a chic setting. It’s the place to be if you’re feeling a little boujee.

  • Deansgate: Deansgate Locks is party central, especially for students! This strip of bars and clubs is always buzzing, with awesome student deals to keep your nights out affordable and fun.

  • Gay Village: Located on Canal Street, the Gay Village is the heart of Manchester’s LGBTQ+ scene. It’s vibrant, welcoming, and full of life—perfect for a night out that’s all about having fun and being yourself.

  • Castlefield: Need a break from the hustle? Castlefield is a gorgeous area with canals, Roman ruins, and the amazing Castlefield Viaduct.

This hidden rooftop garden is like Manchester’s very own secret garden. It’s a great spot to escape the city and enjoy some greenery with stunning views.

Getting Around

Navigating Manchester is a breeze, thanks to its awesome transport options:

  • Buses: Buses are everywhere and super handy for getting around the city.

  • Trams: The Metrolink tram system is your go-to for quick trips around Greater Manchester. It’s cheap, fast, and takes you to cool places like Altrincham and The Trafford Centre.

  • Uber/Bolt: Ditch the old-school taxis and hop in an Uber or Bolt instead. They’re convenient, often have student discounts, and you can easily split the fare with your friends through the app.

  • Trains: In Manchester there are 4 main train stations; Manchester Victoria, Manchester Piccadilly, Deansgate and Oxford Road.

These stations make it super easy to explore the areas just outside Manchester, in just over an hour you can be in The Lake District,

Food Shopping

  •  Asda: Hulme Asda is just a 10-minute walk from campus and the majority of Manchester Met halls.

  • Aldi/Lidl: A bus journey into the center can save you a few pennies on your food shop.

Retail Therapy

Shopaholics, rejoice! Manchester has everything you need for a shopping spree:

  • Manchester Arndale: Smack dab in the city center, the Arndale is a massive shopping mall with all your favourite high street brands. You can easily spend a day here browsing the shops.

  • Trafford Centre: A bit further out, but totally worth the trip. The Trafford Centre is one of the biggest shopping centres in the UK, with loads of stores, restaurants, and even a cinema for when you need a break from all that shopping.

Fun on a Budget

You don’t need to spend a fortune to have a great time in Manchester. Here are some almost-free activities you’ll love:

  • The Union: Keep an eye on The Union’s events calendar—there’s always something fun going on, and a lot of it is free or super cheap.

  • Parks: Manchester has loads of parks where you can chill out and enjoy some fresh air. Perfect for a walk, a picnic, or just a bit of downtime.

Fletcher Moss Park is the perfect place for a picnic with it’s beautiful botanical gardens.

  • Museums: From ancient art to dinosaur skeletons, Manchester’s museums are packed with cool stuff to see—and the best part? Most of them are free!

Manchester Natural History Museum is a treasure trove of cool exhibits, you’ll find it on Oxford Road—not far from Manchester Met.

Manchester Art Gallery is packed with everything from classic paintings to modern art that’ll blow your mind.
