How to Find Your People at Uni

Monday 09-09-2024 - 14:23

Finding friends can be challenging, even in a big city like Manchester. For some people, it will happen with your course or flat mates – but if it doesn’t fall into place straight away, don’t worry!

The Union is here to help. Here’s a list of all the things you can do to find your people.

Clubs & Societies 👯‍♀️

The Union’s got over 100 clubs and societies for you to join and get involved with. From breakdance to book club, chess to gaming and everything in between.

Sports 🏅

In your sporty era? Manchester Met has over have over 40 student-ran sports clubs for you to join, where 4,000 teams compete in BUCS competitions, leagues, and events.

If you're not the competitive type don’t worry! The Uni also has social sports, like badminton and netball, where you can just play for fun.

International Students 🌎

With over 2,000 members, our Facebook group for international students is the perfect platform to meet other international students at Manchester Met and provides a space for you to discuss experiences and share advice. In the group, you’ll find out about events, campaigns and chances for you to give feedback to help improve your time at uni.

During Welcome, we even have our very own Culture Fest where you can immerse yourself in different cultures.

Events 🎪

Here at The Union, we run events all year round to give you the opportunity to meet other students.

At this year's Welcome Week, we’ve got a lineup of over 30 events including a trip to IKEA, Big Balls Bingo, obstacle courses and so much more! There’s something for everyone.

Course Reps 🧑

Course Reps are student volunteers at The Union who represent the experiences of all students throughout their course. Information like what’s going well on a course, and what isn’t, as well as ideas for improvement are all collected by the Course Reps and presented to the University and Union staff to make positive changes.

Becoming a Course Rep is a great way to help bring positive change to your fellow students and meet new people on the journey. Whether you meet other Reps or make connections with the students you’re helping on your course, getting involved is the best way to get the ball rolling.

Student Officers 👋

Every year, we host our Student Officer Elections, where you get to vote for the five students that will lead The Union's political direction, run campaigns on your behalf and hold the University to account on decisions that affect students.

This year’s Officers, voted for by Manchester Met students, are:

Leila Enoki - President

Savannah Dodsworth - Sports Officer

Forum Yadav - Education Officer

Vanessa Nongo - Societies and Development Officer

Gracie Otley - Wellbeing Officer

Whether you’ve got an issue you’re worried about, or you just want a friendly face to have a chat with, pop into The Union and say hi.

Don’t forget to get involved when the next elections come round too. Even if you don’t fancy being an officer yourself, elections are a fun time to listen to other student’s experiences and get your own voice heard by placing your vote.
