Find your people - how to make friends at uni

Wednesday 06-09-2023 - 10:59

Finding friends can be challenging, even in a big city like Manchester. For some people, it will happen naturally on your course or where you live – but if it doesn’t fall into place straight away, don’t worry! The Union is here to help. Here’s a list of all the things you can do to find your people.

Clubs & Societies 👯‍♀️

The Union’s got over 100 clubs and societies for you to join and get involved with. From breakdance to book club, chess to gaming and everything in between, you’re bound to find something for you and make some friends along the way.

International Students 🌎

With over 1,500 members, our Facebook group for international students is the perfect platform to meet other international students at Manchester Met and provides a space for you to discuss experiences and share advice. In the group, you’ll find out about events, campaigns and chances for you to give feedback to help improve your time at uni.

Events 🎪

Here at The Union, we run events all year round to give you the opportunity to meet other students. During Welcome 2023, we’ve got the Mature Student Mixer, Chill & Chat for commuting students, day and night events – plus over 30 others to choose from – so you’ll be sure to find something for you.

Volunteering 💡

Being at the heart of Manchester means you have access to amazing volunteering opportunities that can expand your network in ways you might not imagine. Roles range from micro-volunteering opportunities and positions you can take part in online, to in-person volunteering within the community here in Manchester.

There are currently over 100 opportunities available, so if can spare some of your time and want to make a difference, check out our volunteering portal.

Course Reps 🧑‍💻

Course Reps are student volunteers at The Union who represent the experiences of all students throughout their course. Information like what’s going well on a course, and what isn’t, as well as ideas for improvement are all collected by the Course Reps and presented to the University and Union staff to make positive changes.

Becoming a Course Rep is a great way to help bring positive change to your fellow students and meet new people on the journey. Whether you meet other Reps or make connections with the students you’re helping on your course, getting involved is the best way to get the ball rolling.

Student Officers 👋

Every year, we host our Student Officer Elections, where you get to vote for the five students that will lead The Union's political direction, run campaigns on your behalf and hold the University to account on decisions that affect students.

This year’s officers, voted for by Manchester Met students, are:

+ Ethan Romer - President

+ Savannah Dodsworth - Sports Officer

+ Sandesh Punhani - Education Officer

+ Shazeaa Islam - Societies and Development Officer

+ Iqra Nadeem - Wellbeing Officer

Whether you’ve got an issue you’re worried about or you just want a friendly face to have a chat with, pop into The Union and say hi.

Don’t forget to get involved when the next elections come round too. Even if you don’t fancy being an officer yourself, elections is a fun time to listen to other student’s experiences and get your own voice heard by placing your vote.
